Methodology

This study is based on structured AI visibility scans conducted in March 2026.

  • Sample: 50 roofing companies in Austin, Texas (top 50 by Google review count)
  • Sourcing: companies identified via Google Places API, deduplicated by domain and confirmed for active web presence
  • Models tested: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude
  • Prompts: natural-language questions about Austin roofing services (see below), with no prompt engineering or specialty modifiers
  • Scoring: each company received a visibility score (0-100) based on appearance frequency, mention quality, and cross-model consistency
Important: AI responses change over time as models are updated. The data in this report reflects a single point in time and should not be treated as a permanent ranking or endorsement.

The Questions We Asked AI

We crafted questions that reflect how real homeowners ask AI for roofing help, whether they need storm damage repairs, a full replacement, or just want to compare options.

Can you recommend the best roofing companies in or near Austin, Texas? Who are the top companies in this area and what makes them stand out? Please include company names and websites.

I need a roof replacement in Austin, Texas. Who should I consider? I want to compare experience, reviews, and specializations. Please include company names and websites.

Who are the best roofing contractors serving the greater Austin area? I want to see all the top options across the metro. Please include company names and websites.

Every prompt was sent to all three AI platforms exactly as written. Responses were analyzed for specific company mentions, recommendation context, and level of detail.

Overall Visibility Findings

Appearance Rate by Model Count

Of the 50 roofing companies tested, here is how many appeared in AI responses:

Appeared in 0 models47 mentions
Appeared in 1 model1 mentions
Appeared in 2 models0 mentions
Appeared in 3 models2 mentions

47 companies (94%) received zero AI mentions. Interestingly, the 2 companies that were visible appeared in all 3 models, while Ja-Mar Roofing appeared in only Gemini. There is no middle ground: you are either recognized by multiple platforms or by none at all.

How Each AI Model Sees the Market

Unlike other industries where one model dominates, the roofing scan showed a more balanced picture among the few companies that appeared at all:

ChatGPT
2 companies
Austin Roofing and Construction, Longhorn Roofing
Gemini
3 companies
Ja-Mar Roofing & Sheet Metal, Austin Roofing and Construction, Longhorn Roofing
Claude
2 companies
Austin Roofing and Construction, Longhorn Roofing

Gemini led with 3 mentions from our sample (it was the only model to recognize Ja-Mar Roofing). ChatGPT and Claude both recognized the same 2 companies: Austin Roofing and Construction and Longhorn Roofing. This represents a stark contrast to the HVAC industry, where Gemini mentioned zero companies.

Only 3 roofing companies out of 50 are visible to AI. Austin Roofing and Construction and Longhorn Roofing appeared in all 3 models, while Ja-Mar Roofing appeared in Gemini only. The other 47 companies simply do not exist in AI's awareness.

Visibility Score Distribution

The distribution is almost entirely concentrated at zero. With an average score of 3/100, roofing has the lowest visibility of any industry we have studied.

Google Reviews Have No Impact on AI Recommendations

The pattern holds yet again: Google review counts have no bearing on whether AI recommends a roofing company.

CompanyGoogle ReviewsAI Score
Austin Roofing Co. & Water Damage (WDR)1,339Invisible
Priority Roofing1,088Invisible
LOA Construction961Invisible
Austin Roofing and Construction25964/100
The three highest-reviewed roofing companies in Austin, with a combined 3,388 Google reviews, are all completely invisible to AI. Austin Roofing and Construction, with just 259 reviews, is the #1 most AI-visible roofer in the market.

Multi-Model Disagreement

While the top 2 companies appeared across all 3 models, the broader recommendation landscape showed 100% disagreement in which companies each model surfaces.

Example: “Best roofing companies in Austin”

ChatGPT: Austin Roofing and Construction, Longhorn Roofing

Gemini: Ja-Mar Roofing, Austin Roofing and Construction, Longhorn Roofing

Claude: Austin Roofing and Construction, Longhorn Roofing

Gemini was the only model to mention Ja-Mar Roofing, giving the company a unique advantage on that platform. For the vast majority of roofers, however, no model has them in its awareness at all.

Competitive Density

Across all AI responses, we identified 46 unique companies mentioned by at least one model. Even though most of our top-50 sample was invisible, AI still recommended companies during each prompt. It just recommended different ones that were not in our sample.

Most Frequently Recommended Companies

Longhorn Roofing343 mentions
Roofers Of Austin150 mentions
Elevated Roofing150 mentions
Cedar Park Roofing142 mentions
Austin Roofing & Construction140 mentions

Longhorn Roofing dominated AI recommendations with 343 mentions. Roofers Of Austin and Elevated Roofing tied at 150 mentions each. This concentration around a few names makes the roofing industry particularly “winner take all” when it comes to AI visibility.

AI’s Narrow Lens

According to industry data, there are approximately 600 roofing contractors and companies operating in the Austin metro area. Across all AI responses in this study, the models collectively referenced just 46 unique company names.

Real market (estimated)600 companies
AI’s total awareness46 companies (7.7%)
AI is aware of roughly 8% of Austin's roofing market. Over 550 contractors are entirely outside AI's awareness, regardless of their experience, certifications, or customer satisfaction.

What This Means for Roofing Companies

The data paints a clear picture:

  • Roofing is the most AI-invisible industry we have tested. At 94% invisibility, roofers face a bigger gap than dentists (80%), real estate agents (84%), and HVAC companies (82%). The industry as a whole has very low AI awareness.
  • The gap is an opportunity, not just a problem. With so few competitors visible to AI, roofing companies that gain visibility now have an outsized advantage. There is far less competition for AI recommendations in roofing than in other industries.
  • Reviews do not create AI visibility. Companies with over 1,000 reviews scored zero while those with fewer reviews scored highest. AI uses training data, not live search results or review platforms.
  • When AI does recognize you, it recognizes you broadly. The 2 visible companies appeared in all 3 models, suggesting that whatever factors drive visibility tend to work across platforms simultaneously.
  • Monitoring matters because the landscape is sparse. With so few roofers visible, any new entrant into AI recommendations would immediately stand out.

This report does not prescribe strategies for improving AI placement. No guaranteed method exists to influence AI recommendations. However, knowing where your company stands is the critical first step.

See Your Own Visibility

This report provides a market-level view of the Austin roofing industry. Your specific situation may differ.

  • You could be one of the rare roofers that AI already recognizes
  • Competitors may be visible on platforms you have not checked
  • AI may describe your services inaccurately or reference outdated information

The only way to find out is to scan your own business.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are roofing companies less visible to AI than other industries?
Roofing is an industry with less online content in the sources AI typically trains on (news sites, forums, review aggregators, trade publications). Many roofing companies rely heavily on word-of-mouth, local advertising, and insurance referrals rather than building a broad online footprint. This results in less training data for AI models to draw from.
Does a low AI visibility score mean my roofing company is bad?
Not at all. AI visibility measures how often AI models mention your company, not the quality of your work. Companies with over 1,000 Google reviews and excellent reputations scored zero in our scan. AI visibility and service quality are completely independent metrics.
Why do ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude recommend different roofers?
Each AI model is trained on different datasets at different times. They each develop a separate understanding of the local roofing market. The platform a homeowner uses directly shapes which contractors they discover.
Is this report a ranking of Austin roofing companies?
No. This report measures AI visibility, not quality of workmanship or customer service. A high visibility score means AI models recognize and recommend a company. It says nothing about the quality of their roof installations, repairs, or storm damage restoration.
How were the roofing companies in this study selected?
Companies were identified through structured queries to the Google Places API for roofing contractors in Austin, TX. Results were deduplicated, validated for active web presence, and filtered to roofing service providers within Austin city limits. The top 50 by review count were selected.
