94% of Austin Roofers Are Invisible to AI. The Worst Visibility of Any Industry We've Tested

Executive Summary

We scanned 50 roofing companies in Austin, Texas across three leading AI platforms: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. The results are striking: roofing is the most invisible industry we have tested to date. Nearly every company in our sample is absent from AI responses entirely.

Only 3 out of 50 companies appeared in any AI recommendation at all. The remaining 47 are completely unknown to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.

Methodology

This study is based on structured AI visibility scans conducted in March 2026.

• Sample: 50 roofing companies in Austin, Texas (top 50 by Google review count)
• Sourcing: companies identified via Google Places API, deduplicated by domain and confirmed for active web presence
• Models tested: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude
• Prompts: natural-language questions about Austin roofing services (see below), with no prompt engineering or specialty modifiers
• Scoring: each company received a visibility score (0-100) based on appearance frequency, mention quality, and cross-model consistency

The Questions We Asked AI

We crafted questions that reflect how real homeowners ask AI for roofing help, whether they need storm damage repairs, a full replacement, or just want to compare options.

Every prompt was sent to all three AI platforms exactly as written. Responses were analyzed for specific company mentions, recommendation context, and level of detail.

Overall Visibility Findings

Appearance Rate by Model Count

Of the 50 roofing companies tested, here is how many appeared in AI responses:

47 companies (94%) received zero AI mentions. Interestingly, the 2 companies that were visible appeared in all 3 models, while Ja-Mar Roofing appeared in only Gemini. There is no middle ground: you are either recognized by multiple platforms or by none at all.

How Each AI Model Sees the Market

Unlike other industries where one model dominates, the roofing scan showed a more balanced picture among the few companies that appeared at all:

Gemini led with 3 mentions from our sample (it was the only model to recognize Ja-Mar Roofing). ChatGPT and Claude both recognized the same 2 companies: Austin Roofing and Construction and Longhorn Roofing. This represents a stark contrast to the HVAC industry, where Gemini mentioned zero companies.

Visibility Score Distribution

The distribution is almost entirely concentrated at zero. With an average score of 3/100, roofing has the lowest visibility of any industry we have studied.

Google Reviews Have No Impact on AI Recommendations

The pattern holds yet again: Google review counts have no bearing on whether AI recommends a roofing company.

Multi-Model Disagreement

While the top 2 companies appeared across all 3 models, the broader recommendation landscape showed 100% disagreement in which companies each model surfaces.

Gemini was the only model to mention Ja-Mar Roofing, giving the company a unique advantage on that platform. For the vast majority of roofers, however, no model has them in its awareness at all.

Competitive Density

Across all AI responses, we identified 46 unique companies mentioned by at least one model. Even though most of our top-50 sample was invisible, AI still recommended companies during each prompt. It just recommended different ones that were not in our sample.

Most Frequently Recommended Companies

Longhorn Roofing dominated AI recommendations with 343 mentions. Roofers Of Austin and Elevated Roofing tied at 150 mentions each. This concentration around a few names makes the roofing industry particularly “winner take all” when it comes to AI visibility.

AI’s Narrow Lens

According to industry data, there are approximately 600 roofing contractors and companies operating in the Austin metro area. Across all AI responses in this study, the models collectively referenced just 46 unique company names.

What This Means for Roofing Companies

The data paints a clear picture:

• Roofing is the most AI-invisible industry we have tested. At 94% invisibility, roofers face a bigger gap than dentists (80%), real estate agents (84%), and HVAC companies (82%). The industry as a whole has very low AI awareness.
• The gap is an opportunity, not just a problem. With so few competitors visible to AI, roofing companies that gain visibility now have an outsized advantage. There is far less competition for AI recommendations in roofing than in other industries.
• Reviews do not create AI visibility. Companies with over 1,000 reviews scored zero while those with fewer reviews scored highest. AI uses training data, not live search results or review platforms.
• When AI does recognize you, it recognizes you broadly. The 2 visible companies appeared in all 3 models, suggesting that whatever factors drive visibility tend to work across platforms simultaneously.
• Monitoring matters because the landscape is sparse. With so few roofers visible, any new entrant into AI recommendations would immediately stand out.
