Executive Summary

We scanned 50 HVAC companies in Austin, Texas across three leading AI platforms: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. The findings reveal a massive blind spot: the vast majority of well-reviewed HVAC contractors are completely unknown to AI.

More than 4 out of 5 Austin HVAC companies are completely absent from AI responses. Not a single company from our sample appeared in all three platforms. What stands out most is how differently each AI model perceives the market: Claude identified 8 firms while Gemini recognized none at all from our top-50 sample.

Abacus Plumbing, the highest-reviewed HVAC company in our sample with 5,874 Google reviews, scored a zero on every AI model tested. ABC Home & Commercial, with just 16% of those reviews, holds the top spot at 64.

Methodology

This study is based on structured AI visibility scans conducted in March 2026.

  • Sample: 50 HVAC companies in Austin, Texas (top 50 by Google review count)
  • Sourcing: companies identified via Google Places API, deduplicated by domain and confirmed for active web presence
  • Models tested: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude
  • Prompts: natural-language questions about Austin HVAC services (see below), with no prompt engineering or specialty modifiers
  • Scoring: each company received a visibility score (0-100) based on appearance frequency, mention quality, and cross-model consistency
Important: AI responses change over time as models are updated. The data in this report reflects a specific point in time and should not be treated as a permanent ranking or endorsement.

The Questions We Asked AI

We designed questions that mirror how real homeowners talk to AI when their AC goes out or they need heating service. No jargon. No tricks.

Can you recommend the best HVAC companies in or near Austin, Texas? Who are the top companies in this area and what makes them stand out? Please include company names and websites.

My AC went out in Austin, Texas and I need an HVAC contractor. Who should I consider? I want to compare experience, reviews, and specializations.

Who are the best heating and air conditioning companies serving the greater Austin area? I want to see all the top options across the metro. Please include company names and websites.

Every prompt was sent to all three AI models exactly as written. Responses were analyzed for specific company mentions, service descriptions, and recommendation context.

Overall Visibility Findings

Appearance Rate by Model Count

Of the 50 companies tested, this is how many showed up in AI responses:

Appeared in 0 models41 mentions
Appeared in 1 model7 mentions
Appeared in 2 models2 mentions
Appeared in 3 models0 mentions

41 companies (82%) received zero AI mentions. Only 2 companies managed to appear in more than one model, and none appeared across all three.

How Each AI Model Sees the Market

The gap between AI platforms is dramatic in the HVAC space. Here is how many of our 50 companies each model mentioned:

ChatGPT
3 companies
Austin Air Conditioning, ABC Home & Commercial, Alamo Austin Air Conditioning & Heating
Gemini
0 companies
(none from our sample)
Claude
8 companies
Radiant Plumbing, AC & Electrical, Strand Brothers Service Experts, Stan's Heating & Air, McCullough Heating & AC, Austin Air Conditioning, ABC Home & Commercial, Efficient AC, HVAC Express Contracting

Claude dominated this scan, recognizing 8 of the 50 companies in our sample. ChatGPT identified 3, primarily larger brands. Gemini failed to mention a single company from our top-50 list. Only two companies, Austin Air Conditioning and ABC Home & Commercial, appeared across both ChatGPT and Claude.

Claude recognized nearly 3x more Austin HVAC companies than ChatGPT. Gemini recognized zero. The AI platform a homeowner uses completely determines which companies they discover.

Google Reviews Have No Impact on AI Recommendations

The disconnect between Google presence and AI awareness is stark in the HVAC industry. Companies with thousands of reviews are invisible, while those with far fewer are the ones AI surfaces.

CompanyGoogle ReviewsAI Score
Abacus Plumbing, AC & Electrical5,874Invisible
Fox Service Company5,139Invisible
ARS / Rescue Rooter4,886Invisible
ABC Home & Commercial94464/100
The three highest-reviewed HVAC companies in Austin, with a combined 15,899 Google reviews, are all completely invisible to AI. ABC Home & Commercial, with just 944 reviews, is the #1 most AI-visible HVAC company in the market.

Multi-Model Disagreement

One of the most important findings: AI models disagree on which HVAC companies to recommend 100% of the time.

There is no shared “AI recommendation.” Each model has its own perception of the market, which means homeowners using different AI tools are steered toward completely different contractors.

Example: “Best HVAC companies in Austin”

ChatGPT: Austin Air Conditioning, ABC Home & Commercial, Alamo Austin Air

Gemini: (no specific companies named)

Claude: Radiant Plumbing, Strand Brothers, Stan's Heating & Air, McCullough Heating, HVAC Express

Gemini's complete absence is notable. It responded to HVAC questions with generic advice rather than naming specific local companies. ChatGPT and Claude each recognized different firms, with only two overlapping. This underscores why monitoring all three platforms matters.

Competitive Density

Across all AI responses, we identified 40 unique companies mentioned by at least one model. AI concentrates its recommendations on a small group of names, repeating them frequently while ignoring most of the market.

Most Frequently Recommended Companies

ABC Home & Commercial Services250 mentions
Petrocelli Services149 mentions
Strand Brothers Service Experts147 mentions
Austin Air Conditioning & Heating139 mentions
Schneider Mechanical100 mentions

ABC Home & Commercial Services dominated AI mentions across all models. What is interesting is the appearance of companies like Petrocelli Services and Schneider Mechanical, which did not rank in our top-50 by review count but were frequently cited by AI. This suggests that AI awareness depends on factors beyond Google reviews, potentially including content depth, trade publication coverage, and brand age.

AI’s Narrow Lens

According to industry estimates, there are approximately 800 HVAC contractors and companies operating in the Austin metro area. Across all 450 AI responses in this study, the models collectively referenced just 40 unique company names.

Real market (estimated)800 companies
AI’s total awareness40 companies (5%)

AI models are aware of roughly 5% of the actual HVAC market in Austin. The remaining 760 companies are entirely outside AI's awareness.

AI recognizes just 5% of Austin's HVAC market. Over 750 contractors are completely invisible to AI tools, regardless of their experience or customer satisfaction.

What This Means for HVAC Companies

The data reveals a clear set of takeaways:

  • AI is becoming a discovery channel for home services. Homeowners increasingly ask AI for contractor recommendations, especially during urgent situations like AC failures. The companies AI surfaces get the first look.
  • Being absent means being skipped. 82% of the companies in this study do not appear in any AI recommendation. That is a rapidly growing channel where competitors may already have a foothold.
  • One model is not representative. With 100% disagreement and Gemini recognizing zero companies from our sample, checking a single AI tool gives a deeply incomplete view of the landscape.
  • Reviews do not drive AI visibility. Companies with nearly 6,000 reviews scored zero, while those with fewer reviews ranked highest. AI models rely on training data, not live Google rankings.
  • Claude leads in HVAC awareness. Claude mentioned 8 companies versus ChatGPT's 3 and Gemini's 0. This gap means your visibility profile varies dramatically across platforms.

This report does not prescribe strategies for improving AI placement. No proven method exists to guarantee AI recommendations. However, understanding where your company stands, and monitoring shifts over time, is the essential first step.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do AI recommendations for HVAC companies change?
AI recommendations can shift with each model update, which happens anywhere from weekly to quarterly. A company that is recommended today could vanish from results next month. Continuous monitoring is the only way to stay on top of changes.
Does being invisible to AI mean my HVAC business is unsuccessful?
Not at all. AI visibility and business success are completely independent. A company can have thousands of five-star Google reviews and a strong referral network while being entirely absent from AI recommendations. AI models draw from training data, not live search results or industry directories.
Why do ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude recommend different HVAC companies?
Each AI model is trained on different datasets at different times using different techniques. They each form a separate understanding of the local HVAC market. There is no shared recommendation list across platforms.
Is this report a ranking of Austin HVAC companies?
No. This report measures AI visibility, not quality of service or workmanship. A high visibility score means AI models recognize and recommend a company. It does not reflect the quality of installations, repairs, or customer service.
How were the HVAC companies in this study selected?
Companies were identified through structured queries to the Google Places API for HVAC contractors in Austin, TX. Results were deduplicated, validated for active web presence, and filtered to include HVAC service providers within Austin city limits. The top 50 by review count were selected.
